Curriculum Intent

We believe that students' imagination should be engaged in order to encourage resilience and self-expression. Students study art and design through personalised projects which aim to build their confidence through risk taking, experimenting and exploring ideas.

As well as giving students a sense of individual identity, the art curriculum aims to develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us. Reading and comprehension is encouraged through research and investigation of art work and selecting appropriate  information in order to annotate work. The use of knowledge organisers in lessons equips students with keywords and  helps students with their written elements.

The art department prides itself on a calm working environment that encourages students to focus on their tasks and take pride in their work. At KS4 students are expected to sit a 10 hour exam. In order to prepare for this, ‘focussed study’ is encouraged at KS3.

To enable students to deepen their understanding of the Visual Language used in Art, the Art department at Havant Academy is well-equipped with provision for working in a range of media including painting and drawing, printmaking, clay and resistant materials as well as ICT.

The department has an impressive collection of books and resources, covering the development of art and design from cave painting to more contemporary ideas and themes. Students are encouraged to find their own path through personal responses inspired by the world around them.
